Sardinian coast racing — Mediterranean waters and Catalan heritage
Alghero, Italy · June 7, 2026
IRONMAN 70.3 Alghero brings athletes to the stunning northwest coast of Sardinia. A Mediterranean sea swim, a bike through the rolling Sardinian countryside, and a coastal run in one of the island's most charming towns. Alghero's Catalan heritage and crystal-clear waters make this a true destination race.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in the clear Mediterranean waters off Alghero's coast. Sardinia's northwest coast offers excellent water clarity and typically calm conditions. Water temperatures in early June are around 19–22°C — often wetsuit-legal. The historic old town provides a dramatic backdrop to the swim start.
Bike Course
The bike course takes athletes into the rolling hills and countryside of northwest Sardinia. The terrain offers a mix of coastal riding and inland climbing through the island's characteristically rugged landscape. The roads can be technical in sections, and the Mediterranean sun adds warmth as the day progresses.
Run Course
The run follows the Alghero coastline and town streets. The Catalan-influenced architecture and seaside promenade create a unique atmosphere. The terrain is relatively flat along the coast, making for a pleasant run in a beautiful setting.
Race Day Conditions
Early June in Sardinia offers warm, dry conditions. Air temperatures range from 18–28°C with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. Wind can be a factor on exposed coastal sections but is generally manageable. The Sardinian climate at this time of year is reliably pleasant for racing.
Performance starts dropping over 22°C and humidity makes it worse. How heat compounds across the bike and run — and why the bike hides it.
