Swedish lakeside racing — Vättern's shores and Småland forests
· July 5, 2026
IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping takes athletes to the southern shore of Lake Vättern — Sweden's second largest lake. A lake swim, a rolling bike through the Småland countryside, and a run along the Jönköping waterfront. This is Scandinavian triathlon at its best — pristine nature, efficient organisation, and a passionate Swedish triathlon community.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in Lake Vättern, one of the largest and deepest lakes in Europe. Water temperatures in early July are around 16–19°C — wetsuit-legal and on the cooler side. The lake is famous for its crystal-clear water and can be choppy in windy conditions due to its vast size. The Jönköping waterfront provides the start and finish.
Bike Course
The bike course heads into the rolling Småland countryside — a landscape of forests, lakes, and red-painted farmhouses. The terrain is genuinely rolling with moderate climbing, and the smooth Swedish roads make for pleasant riding. The route passes through quintessentially Swedish scenery and is well-supported by local communities along the way.
Run Course
The run follows the shores of Lake Vättern through Jönköping. The terrain is relatively flat along the waterfront with lake views throughout. The Scandinavian summer daylight means excellent visibility, and the Swedish triathlon community provides warm, enthusiastic support. The finish area along the waterfront creates a festive atmosphere.
Race Day Conditions
Early July in southern Sweden offers pleasant summer conditions. Air temperatures range from 14–24°C with long daylight hours. The lake moderates temperatures, and conditions are generally comfortable for racing. Rain is always possible in Scandinavia, but summer weather in Jönköping is typically mild and manageable.
