Germany's toughest 70.3 — rolling hills in the heart of Baden-Württemberg
Bad Schönborn / Ubstadt-Weiher, Germany · May 31, 2026
IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau is known across the German triathlon community as one of the hilliest 70.3 courses in Europe. Set in the rolling wine country between Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, this race demands climbing ability on the bike and resilience on a challenging run. Not a PB course — a test-of-character course.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in a lake in the rolling Kraichgau countryside. Freshwater lake conditions provide calm, predictable swimming. Water temperatures in late May are typically 18–22°C — comfortably wetsuit-legal. The peaceful rural setting makes for a pleasant start before the challenging bike ahead.
Bike Course
The Kraichgau bike course is famously hilly. The route winds through the wine-growing hills of Baden-Württemberg with constant climbing and descending — there are very few flat sections to recover. The elevation gain is significant for a 70.3, and the course rewards athletes with genuine climbing ability and good descending skills. The narrow, winding roads through vineyard villages add a technical element. This bike course is the reason Kraichgau is considered one of the toughest 70.3s in Europe.
Run Course
The run continues the hilly theme with a course that includes genuine elevation changes through the countryside. This is not a flat recovery run — the hills on tired legs from the bike create a very demanding second half of the race. The rural setting provides beautiful scenery but limited crowd support outside the finish area. Athletes who manage their bike effort wisely will find strength for the run; those who don't will struggle.
Race Day Conditions
Late May in the Kraichgau region offers mild temperatures ranging from 12–24°C. The weather can be variable — sunshine, cloud, and the possibility of showers are all realistic. The sheltered wine-country valleys tend to be warmer than exposed hilltops. Overall, the conditions are manageable, and weather is rarely the primary challenge here — the hills are.
