The half-distance Basque experience — hills, culture, and passion
Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain · July 12, 2026
IRONMAN 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz offers the Basque Country racing experience at half distance. A reservoir swim, a rolling bike through the northern Spanish hills, and a run through the city. The same passionate Basque atmosphere as the full distance, compressed into a faster, punchier race.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in a reservoir near Vitoria-Gasteiz. Calm freshwater conditions with the Basque mountains as a backdrop. Water temperatures in mid-July are warm and comfortable.
Bike Course
The 90 km bike course tackles the rolling Basque countryside with moderate to significant climbing. The hilly terrain tests climbing ability and the descents require confidence. The scenery through the green Basque hills is outstanding.
Run Course
The half marathon runs through Vitoria-Gasteiz with the same passionate Basque support as the full distance. The flat city terrain provides fast running conditions after the hilly bike.
Race Day Conditions
Mid-July in the Basque Country offers warm, pleasant conditions. Air temperatures range from 16–28°C. Northern Spain's temperate climate avoids the extremes of the south, making for comfortable racing.
Same FTP on two different courses produces two completely different races. Elevation, wind, and shelter change what every watt is worth.
