A still-water river-bay swim and a three-lap bridge course through Canada's capital
Ottawa, Canada · August 2, 2026
IRONMAN Canada-Ottawa is a full-distance race in Canada's capital, first held in 2025. A 3.8 km still-water swim in Britannia Bay leads to a 180 km three-lap bike that crosses the Ottawa River bridges each lap (~625 m of climbing), then a 42.2 km three-lap run on the downtown canal and parkland pathways, finishing at Major's Hill Park beside the Château Laurier. Held the first Sunday of August.
Swim Course
The 3.8 km single loop is in the Ottawa River at Britannia Beach — but the venue is Britannia Bay (Lac Deschênes), a wide, lake-like section with no meaningful current. Despite the river name, expect flat, still water, not the downstream assist of a Chattanooga or Augusta. Water sits around 21°C in early August, comfortably inside the 24.5°C wetsuit cutoff. Rolling start from 06:00, with a 2h20 swim cut-off from your individual start.
Bike Course
180 km over three laps through Ottawa and Gatineau, crossing the Champlain, Alexandra and Portage bridges each lap. At ~625 m of climbing it's rolling parkway and city riding — Kichi Zibi Mikan and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway — rather than sustained climbs, so it rewards steady power and aero position over surges. Fast, sheltered parkway sections are broken up by the repeated bridge approaches and urban turns. Intermediate cut-off at 120.5 km (14:55 local); the bike closes 10h30 after the last swim start.
Run Course
42.2 km over three laps on Ottawa's downtown pathways — the Queen Elizabeth Driveway along the Rideau Canal, then the Central Experimental Farm and Dominion Arboretum — finishing at Major's Hill Park beside the Château Laurier. Gently rolling at ~194 m of total gain, with aid roughly every 1.8 km. The three-lap format keeps you in the crowd-lined core and gives frequent, evenly-spaced pacing checkpoints.
Race Day Conditions
Early August in Ottawa is warm and can be genuinely hot: race-day temperatures across 2022–2025 have ranged 13.8–30.8°C, averaging ~23°C, and the hot, hazy 2025 debut produced a 13:05 median finish. Wind is usually light (~9 km/h, often southerly). Plan bike and run fuelling for afternoon heat on the exposed parkway and pathway sections — the forecast can shift, so check race week.
