Alpine lake, mountain passes, and 100,000 spectators — the Austrian classic
Klagenfurt, Austria · June 14, 2026
IRONMAN Klagenfurt is one of the biggest and most iconic IRONMAN events in Europe. A swim in the warm Wörthersee, a challenging bike through the Austrian Alps, and a lakeside marathon with over 100,000 spectators lining the course. The combination of genuine mountain racing and incredible atmosphere makes Klagenfurt a bucket-list IRONMAN for European athletes.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in the Wörthersee — one of Austria's warmest lakes. Water temperatures in mid-June typically reach 22–24°C, making this one of the warmer lake swims on the circuit and potentially non-wetsuit legal in hot years. The calm, clean lake water with the Alps as a backdrop makes for an exceptional swim experience.
Bike Course
The 180 km bike course heads into the Austrian Alps with significant climbing. The route includes mountain passes and demanding gradients that test climbing ability at full-distance intensity. The scenery is world-class — Alpine meadows, mountain passes, and descents through Austrian valleys. This is one of the hillier full-distance IRONMAN courses in Europe, and the bike leg is where the race is won or lost.
Run Course
The marathon follows the shores of the Wörthersee with what is reportedly the largest IRONMAN spectator turnout in Europe — over 100,000 people line the course. The terrain is relatively flat along the lake, providing relief after the mountainous bike. The atmosphere is extraordinary — Austrian triathlon fans create a wall of noise that carries athletes through the marathon. The finish in Klagenfurt is one of the great IRONMAN experiences.
Race Day Conditions
Mid-June in Carinthia offers warm summer conditions. Air temperatures range from 14–28°C. Mornings start cool but afternoons can be warm, especially in the sheltered lake valleys. Afternoon Alpine thunderstorms are a realistic possibility — they develop quickly over the mountains. The weather adds unpredictability to an already demanding course.
