The Olympic legacy course — Adirondack mountains and Mirror Lake

Lake Placid, United States · July 19, 2026

IRONMAN Lake Placid is steeped in Olympic and IRONMAN history. A swim in Mirror Lake, a two-loop bike through the Adirondack Mountains with serious climbing, and a run through the charming Olympic village. This is one of the original IRONMAN events in the United States, and the combination of mountain scenery, challenging terrain, and small-town atmosphere makes it one of the most beloved.

Swim Course

Mirror Lake — the most scenic swim start in American IRONMAN

The swim takes place in Mirror Lake in the heart of Lake Placid village. The freshwater conditions are calm and pristine, with the Adirondack Mountains reflected in the still morning water. Water temperatures in mid-July are around 20–24°C. The village setting means spectators can watch from the shore, creating an intimate atmosphere that larger venues can't match.

  • Pristine Adirondack mountain lake
  • Calm freshwater — no current, no waves
  • Village setting with close spectator access
  • One of the most beautiful swim starts in IRONMAN

Bike Course

Two loops through the Adirondack Mountains

The 180 km bike course is a two-loop route through the Adirondack Mountains. The terrain features long, sustained climbs and fast descents on mountain roads with significant total elevation gain. The signature climb is the out-and-back to the turnaround, which athletes face twice. The mountain roads are well-maintained and the scenery — deep forests, mountain lakes, and soaring peaks — is some of the finest on any IRONMAN course worldwide.

  • Adirondack mountain climbing — two loops of sustained effort
  • Significant total elevation gain
  • Long sustained climbs and fast mountain descents
  • Stunning mountain scenery — forests, lakes, and peaks

Run Course

Two-loop marathon through the Olympic village

The marathon runs through the village of Lake Placid and surrounding roads. The town that hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics provides an incredible atmosphere — spectators line the main street and the finish at the Olympic Oval is deeply emotional. The terrain includes some hills, and the altitude (around 600m) adds a subtle challenge. The two-loop format means athletes pass through the electric village atmosphere twice.

  • Olympic village atmosphere — 1932 and 1980 Winter Games legacy
  • Main street finish area with massive crowd support
  • Some hills and altitude effect (~600m)
  • Two loops through the heart of the village

Adirondack summer — warm days, cool mornings, mountain weather

Mid-July in the Adirondacks offers pleasant summer conditions. Air temperatures range from 14–28°C with cool mornings and warm afternoons.
