Flat, fast, and unforgiving in the Texas heat

The Woodlands, United States · April 18, 2026

The North American Championship returns to The Woodlands for one of the fastest full-distance courses on the circuit. A point-to-point lake swim, two-loop bike on closed roads, and a three-loop run through some of the best crowd support in triathlon — all under the relentless April Texas sun.

Swim Course

Point-to-point lake swim with a canal finish

The swim starts at North Shore Park and finishes at Town Green Park, making this a rare point-to-point IRONMAN swim. The course covers 3.8 km through Lake Woodlands with a rolling start to spread the field. The final stretch threads through a narrow canal lined with spectators — a memorable way to end the swim leg. Lake Woodlands is typically calm with no current to contend with, though the shallow sections near shore can create congestion in the early metres. At 23°C, the water is usually wetsuit-legal and comfortable.

  • Point-to-point course — no out-and-back navigation
  • Rolling start reduces first-buoy congestion
  • Canal finish with spectators on both sides
  • Lake conditions — calm water, no current, no swell

Bike Course

Two loops on closed roads — flat, fast, and exposed to wind

The 180 km bike course winds through The Woodlands suburbs before heading onto the Hardy Toll Road for two full loops. The terrain is flat — just 372m of total elevation gain — but the 105 sharp turns through the residential sections demand constant attention and smooth bike handling. Speed doesn't come from climbing ability here; it comes from holding steady power through corners and managing the crosswind sections along the exposed toll road. Wind typically builds through the morning from the southwest and the five crosswind-exposed sections on the Hardy are where poorly chosen deep-section wheels become a liability.

  • Hardy Toll Road sections are fully closed to traffic
  • 105 sharp turns through The Woodlands — corner speed matters
  • 5 crosswind-exposed sections along the toll road
  • 6 U-turns break rhythm — smooth re-acceleration saves watts
  • Flat profile suits time triallists — hold power, don't chase speed

Run Course

Three loops of crowd support — and relentless heat

The marathon is a three-loop course entirely within The Woodlands, and it's consistently rated one of the best run courses on the IRONMAN circuit for spectator support. The highlight is Hippie Hollow at the lakeside — a festival of music, costumes, and energy that lifts athletes on every lap. But the real story of this run is the heat. By mid-morning, temperatures climb into the mid-to-upper 20s with humidity to match. Shade is limited, and the flat terrain offers no relief from the sun. Athletes who overcook the bike pay for it here more than on any hilly course — there's nowhere to hide when your cooling system fails on a flat, exposed road. Managing effort on the bike to preserve your run is the single most important strategic decision at IRONMAN Texas.

  • Hippie Hollow — the most famous spectator section in IRONMAN racing
  • Three loops mean crew access every 14 km
  • Flat but exposed — limited shade and direct sun through the afternoon
  • Heat management is the race-defining challenge, not terrain

Race Day Conditions

Hot racing conditions — plan your cooling strategy

April in The Woodlands means warm mornings that turn hot by mid-race. Historical data shows race day temperatures ranging from 14°C at the early morning swim start to 30°C by the afternoon run, with an average around 25°C. Humidity sits around 64%, making it feel hotter than the thermometer suggests. Wind averages 15 km/h but can gust higher on the exposed Hardy Toll Road sections. Pre-cooling strategies, increased fluid and sodium intake, and a conservative bike effort to protect your run are not optional here — they're the difference between a strong finish and a long walk.
