The pinnacle of triathlon — where legends are made

The IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona is the race every triathlete dreams of. A Pacific Ocean swim in Kailua Bay, a scorching bike ride through the lava fields of the Queen K highway, and a marathon on the hottest run course in professional triathlon. This is not a fast course — it is a demanding one, where heat, wind, and mental fortitude decide everything.
Swim Course
The 3.8 km swim takes place in the open Pacific waters of Kailua Bay. Water temperatures sit around 26–28°C — non-wetsuit legal in most years. The bay is generally calm near shore, but ocean swells can develop further out, particularly on the return leg. The energy of the Kona swim start is unique in triathlon — thousands of athletes entering together, with the Kailua Pier and the Ali'i Drive crowds watching from the shore. The course is a rectangular loop with good sighting on the turn buoys. Strong open-water swimmers gain time here; weaker swimmers lose more than they expect in the swell and current.
Bike Course
The 180 km bike course is defined by the Queen Kaahumanu Highway — a long, exposed road cutting through black lava fields with virtually no shade, no shelter, and frequent crosswinds from the Kohala coast. The route heads north from Kona to the Hawi turnaround, climbing steadily before a fast descent back. The terrain is rolling rather than mountainous, but the combination of heat (road surface temperatures can exceed 50°C), humidity, and sustained crosswinds makes this one of the most physically demanding bike legs in triathlon. Power-based pacing is essential — the athletes who win Kona are the ones who ride conservatively enough to still run a marathon in the heat.
Run Course
The marathon begins on Ali'i Drive with crowd support, then heads out onto the Queen K and into the Energy Lab — the most infamous stretch in triathlon. The Energy Lab is an industrial research facility road with zero shade, reflected heat from the surrounding lava, and complete isolation. It is here, around km 30, that Kona breaks athletes who overcooled the bike. The course is an out-and-back with a flat to gently rolling profile, but the heat and humidity make every kilometre feel harder than the last. The finish on Ali'i Drive is the most emotionally charged in the sport.
Race Day Conditions
Kona's race day conditions are reliably hot and humid. Temperatures start around 25°C at the swim and climb past 32°C by the afternoon run. Humidity is high, and the lava fields create radiant heat that amplifies the air temperature. Wind is the other factor — Kohala crosswinds on the bike can exceed 40 km/h. Heat acclimatisation is not optional for Kona — it is the single most important preparation factor. Athletes who haven't spent 10–14 days adapting to tropical heat will struggle regardless of fitness.
