The original European IRONMAN — Frankfurt's Römerberg finish is legendary
Frankfurt am Main, Germany · June 28, 2026
IRONMAN Frankfurt is where European IRONMAN began, and it remains one of the most prestigious full-distance races in the world. A river swim, a fast bike through the Taunus hills and Rhine-Main plain, and a marathon finishing at the iconic Römerberg square. The German triathlon community's passion and the historic finish location make Frankfurt a bucket-list race for European IRONMAN athletes.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in the Langener Waldsee — a large lake south of Frankfurt. The freshwater conditions are calm and the lake is well-suited for mass-start triathlon swimming. Water temperatures in late June are typically 20–24°C. The tree-lined lake provides a peaceful start to what will be a demanding day.
Bike Course
The 180 km bike course heads north into the Taunus hills before returning through the flat Rhine-Main plain. The course features a mix of climbing through the forested Taunus and fast, flat riding on the return. German road surfaces are excellent, and the course is one of the faster European full-distance options. Wind can be a factor on the exposed plain sections.
Run Course
The marathon takes athletes through Frankfurt and its surrounding parks before the legendary finish at the Römerberg — Frankfurt's medieval central square. The Römerberg finish is one of the most emotional in IRONMAN racing, with thousands of spectators packed into the historic square. The German triathlon community's passion for this event is unmatched — the atmosphere carries athletes through the toughest kilometres.
Race Day Conditions
Late June in Frankfurt offers warm summer conditions. Air temperatures range from 16–28°C with moderate humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible, particularly when hot air builds over the Rhine-Main basin. The continental climate means warm days and generally pleasant racing, but the weather can turn quickly.
