Swim Course

Mountain lake swim at dawn

The swim takes place in a mountain lake in the Åre region, starting at dawn. Water temperatures can be cold — expect 14–17°C in early July. The mountain lake setting is remote and beautiful, with a bus to the start adding to the expedition atmosphere. This is not a beach-resort swim — it's a mountain lake in northern Sweden.

  • Mountain lake swim in cold water (14–17°C)
  • Dawn start for early morning racing
  • Remote mountain setting
  • Quality wetsuit essential for thermal protection

Bike Course

205 km through the Swedish mountains — endurance cycling at its purest

The 205 km bike course traverses the mountain roads of Jämtland. The terrain is rolling to mountainous with significant climbing through some of Sweden's most dramatic scenery. This is longer than a standard IRONMAN bike course and passes through remote mountain landscapes. The course demands self-sufficiency, endurance, and respect for the elements — weather in the Swedish mountains can change rapidly.

  • 205 km — longer than standard IRONMAN distance
  • Mountain roads through remote Swedish terrain
  • Self-sufficiency required in remote sections
  • Weather can change rapidly in the mountains

Run Course

Trail marathon ascending Åreskutan — mountain running to the summit

The run is a 42 km trail course that ascends to the summit of Åreskutan at 1,420m. This is not road running — the course includes gravel, forest trails, and mountain paths. A support runner is mandatory for the final mountain section above the treeline. Mountain safety kit must be carried. The run splits into a high route (yellow t-shirt) and low route (white t-shirt) at a checkpoint based on athlete condition and cutoff times. Finishing the high route to the summit is the ultimate goal.

  • Trail run ascending to 1,420m summit of Åreskutan
  • Mandatory support runner for the mountain section
  • Compulsory mountain safety kit
  • High route (summit) vs low route — based on condition at checkpoint

Race Day Conditions

Mountain weather — be prepared for everything

Early July in the Swedish mountains means unpredictable weather. Temperatures can range from 5°C at the summit to 25°C in the valleys. Rain, wind, fog, and even snow above the treeline are all possible. The mandatory mountain safety kit exists for good reason. Athletes must prepare for the full spectrum of mountain conditions.
