The Mediterranean cycling paradise — Mallorca delivers on every level
Alcúdia, Spain · May 9, 2026
Mallorca is the spiritual home of European cycling, and IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia puts athletes on the roads that pros train on year-round. A turquoise bay swim in the Port d'Alcúdia, a rolling bike through the Mallorcan countryside, and a flat beachfront run. This sells out in hours — one of the most popular destination 70.3s in the world.
Swim Course
The swim takes place in the Bay of Alcúdia — a wide, sheltered bay with crystal-clear Mediterranean water. Conditions are typically calm with excellent visibility. Water temperatures in early May hover around 17–19°C, making this wetsuit-legal. The single-loop course benefits from the bay's natural protection from open-sea conditions, making it one of the more pleasant 70.3 swims on the circuit.
Bike Course
The 90 km bike course takes athletes through the rolling Mallorcan countryside that has made the island Europe's premier cycling destination. The roads are smooth, the scenery is stunning, and the terrain offers a mix of flat coastal sections and rolling inland climbs. This isn't the flat time trial of Jesolo — there's genuine climbing involved, and the athletes who handle the undulations efficiently gain significant time. The route showcases why thousands of cyclists choose Mallorca for their training camps.
Run Course
The run follows the flat beachfront promenade in Port d'Alcúdia. The terrain is friendly with minimal elevation change, and the course benefits from sea breezes that keep temperatures manageable. Spectator support is concentrated along the promenade, creating a lively atmosphere. The two-lap format means athletes pass through the finish area and supporter zones twice.
Race Day Conditions
Early May in Mallorca offers some of the best racing weather on the 70.3 calendar. Air temperatures range from 15–24°C with low humidity, plenty of sunshine, and typically light winds. The Mediterranean climate at this time of year is warm enough for comfort without the extreme heat of high summer. This is why Mallorca is a destination race — the conditions are almost always ideal.
